ok i want to do string a through the lid using a brace do i need the ferrules on bottom of the brace and then top of the lid or is that over kill ? and question #2 i want to build a 12 string lap do you think an oak 1x4 would be strong enough or should i brace just to be sure ? its a solid body lap so there is that added strength too .
If the brace is wood, I would put ferrules top and bottom. This ensures that the string ends don't cut into the wood, keeping it in tune and not eventually wearing through.
There is a lot of string tension on a 12 string. I would brace it somehow. Perhaps a ¼" fretboard glued to the top.
I use these ferrules http://www.ebay.com/itm/200pc-Brass-Eyelet-Rings-Set-4mm-8mm-for-Ey...
