Steampunk

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and speculative fiction, frequently featuring elements of fantasy, that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles, analog computers, or digital mechanical computers (such as Charles Babbage's Analytical engine); these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality.
Steampunk is often associated with cyberpunk and shares a similar fanbase and theme of rebellion, but developed as a separate movement (though both have considerable influence on each other). Apart from time period and level of technological development, the main difference between cyberpunk and steampunk is that steampunk settings usually tend to be less obviously dystopian than cyberpunk, or lack dystopian elements entirely.
Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk.

Love, Love, Love Steam Punk and am going to build a Steam Punk CBG in the future but its not going to be ready (havent finished sourcing cogs or even learnt to solder yet). Can't wait to see what people come up with.

Steampumk is an aesthetic endeavor based on fiction. The goal for most steampunk artists is to create a convincing looking artifact. It doesn't have to work, it just needs to look like it works. Its not as easy as you may think. You can just slap on gratuitous parts, but you wont have a very successful piece.

Starfish, as cool as it would be to make a functional, working mechanism it seems what passes for steampunk these days is decorative. I'd love to design a working steam contraption myself, maybe a wind instrument like a bagpipe, flute or even a harmonica air supply. I wonder if one of us can rig a piston to turn a hurdy gurdy...
I guess anything that artistically represents Steampunk is acceptable, but it would certainly be great to see some real Rube Goldberg inventions. Mine will be a combination of the 2, leaning more towards function.

Here's a question: Does the instrument need to be functional with regard to the steampunk aesthetic? What I mean is, does the instrument need to make its' sound using say, clockwork gears, hand cranks and the like (I wish I could incorporate real steam!), or does it just have to look 'steampunk'-y? Anyone can slap copper tubing and watch parts onto an existing instrument and call it Steampunk. What are the specific qualifying parameters to make an instrument Steampunk?
