Previously, I've cut notches in the bouts, spline or both and made them fit so tightly that you can pick up one end and lift the whole thing up like a Tinkertoy. Precision work, but a pain in the tailpiece. This time I'll try cutting the bout into 3 pieces and gluing them with the bouts in place, so tightly that the bouts will stay in place, even without glue, friction only. Then I will slide the bouts out.

I COULD glue the three pieces of spline in at the same time I glue the three bouts, but that's a half-dozen pieces with different shapes. Sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me.

ALWAYS dry assemble your pieces before applying glue! When you put glue on two pieces of wood and apply pressure, you make things slicker than motor oil on ice. the blue pieces of masking tape will just keep things from skating until the glue starts to set up.
