I went with the mic for a couple reasons, I'd picked up an old SMG-188 karaoke machine with the mic for $3.75 at a local thrift store and I wanted to be able to run it through that as its amp, when I tried the piezo diddly-bow through it, it didn't work very well. The other reason, which goes with the first, is that set up this way if the mic / kalimba is held in the off hand like in the pic in the comments it can be played with the fingers of the dominant hand while using the mic for vocals.
How about using a piezo to amp it?
Infamous last words "It's only 8 little tuned cantilever springs, how hard can be?" I found out that for something that simple, there sure a lot of ways you can screw up before getting all 8 ring true with no buzzes or dead thumps and clunks. I'm pretty sure I found them all before I finally got it right.
Next step is to figure out a way to mount it to the mic that looks a bit better.
