I'm using a surform half-round file to thin down the heel section of the neck. MAN, I love the way it goes through mahogany like cheese. The half-round makes getting the curves in easier.
The heel will be attached to the ukulele body, so it has to be big enough to hold up to the strings that will be trying to pull the neck away. But I want to remove enough to keep the weight down, and to make it comfortable to play the frets on that end of the neck without a huge chunk of wood in the way. A graceful look is a plus, this is one part of a ukulele that is more sculptural than structural, and I want it to look good.
