What instruments are you building or playing?
20+ years ago I made a lot of handmade drums and flutes, mostly out of found objects. I did a lot of hand drum playing as well. I also got into making other experimental instruments after discovering Bart Hopkins and EMI magazine. Unfortunately about 15 years ago I had to run off to join the.... Seminary (Div. School) and got away from both making and playing. Last Wednesday a neighbor of mine came to sit on my porch with his guitar and I found myself dragging out one of the last drums I still owned. But I had no chops left. Literally the next day while cruising around youtube the gods of the internet decided I needed to see a video about Diddley Bow and Cigar box guitar making. I went home and made one, and all of the joy of those years came back to me. Except I never made REAL stringed instruments before. I only wish I still had all the old tools I had acquired and made back then. But I'm hooked now on CBGs... spent my day off yesterday crawling around reclamation yards for old bannister wood, and other odds and ends and hit a couple cigar stores for boxes. I have other hobbies including homebrewing, cooking and umpiring/promoting vintage base ball games in the Detroit area, but I haven't been this excited in a long time about something.
