A new client build. Here's a photoshopped idea for a general shape. I'm going for a hot rod, chevy tail fin vibe. The wood in this idea shot is 2 pieces of African Black Walnut with a racing stripe down the center made of Bloodwood/Maple/Bloodwood, just laying next to each other - no glue. Nothing is definite yet but the wheels are turning...

<(shape is PhotoShopped, just wait till I make sawdust)

It's past Midnight:30 and I've been sitting here with the Hot Rod and came up with an idea for the sound hole

What do you think?

Stay tuned, it gets better, this will be a cool tutorial. With a top and bottom half I can hollow the semi-hollow part and the control cavity and then glue the pieces together and you'll never know.

Same thing with the pickup routs and cavities, one hole for the top, one cavity for the pup to sit in. The insides of both halves will get a lot of wood taken away.

I think,

I have no idea what this will end up as...

Beautiful, Ted! Love the mudflap girl soundhole!

Today I routed the neck pocket, no pics, sorry. Instead of using the router and a template for the sound hole cavity I drilled lots of holes with a forstner bit. I'll clean it up with the finger sander

I've been trying to decide on a soundhole shape to go with the vibe of the guitar. The mudflap girl is cool, but I shrunk the art down to a size that will fit and I don't think I'd be able to cut it out properly. I did have another idea today that might just work - flames

Flame soundhole is also a cool idea. Like it :)

The point of no return! Another half inch and I'm committed to this soundhole design. I hate having to drill into a guitar body, especially one as intricate as the Hot Rod. Stress??? Yup!!!!

Next up rough cut the shape with the finest jigsaw blade I have

Follow that with a selection of files and sandpaper

And here we have it!

WHEW!!!!! I'm beginning to believe y'all that I don't charge enough for my creations...

Nice job!!!

A little more sanding, a little tru-oil, smoothed the bottom of the sound cavity and added a veneer of curly yellow birch inside
