Welcome to the site! I saw your question on the Nation chat site. A 3 stringer allows one to use tunings such as DAD or GAD, great for power chords, etc. Adding more strings does make it a bit more complicated, but the principles of playing are the same. Mark Sandman of the band MORPHINE converted his bass into a 2 string, inspired by a blues musician who played a unitar, or one string guitar. Check out the diddley bow. Personally, my builds have been mostly 8 strings, but I have also built a 10 string and a 12 string (all photosare posted on a slide show on my Nation site). Forgive me for pontificating a bit much...LOL!!!
