Here's a good photo of a Welsh crwth:

It's an odd bowed lyre with a fretless fingerboard and two drone strings. What is hard to see in photos is how the bridge goes through a sondhole and acts like a violin's sound post. One person who makes these instruments is Michael J. King. http://www.michaeljking.com/crwth.htm He builds many old instruments (including kantele and langspil) and newer ones like ukulele and stick dulcimers. My lyres were built using his plans. This guy is a marvel and an inspiration to any instrument builder who meets him. He's posted hours of good vids on Youtube, giving free pointers on lutherie.
