Pickups & Wiring

There are many ways to amplify your instrument and many options to wire your circuit. Lets discuss types of magnetic pickups, piezo transducers, speakers as input, microphone elements and experimental techniques. I'm having about 50% success at soldering lead wires onto bare piezos. Getting a good connection on the outside, metal rim has not been an issue. The connection to the ceramic section is the problem area. I've tried it with and without scraping off the ceramic with mixed results. Even when I smear some paste flux on the area I get failed connections. The solder seems to flow and not ball up but sometimes it just does not stick. Any suggestions?

I am a newby when it comes to instrument electronics. I have been reading about piezo type pickups. I built my second CBD and put one of Ted's piezo pickups in it. My question is; what is the best way to install a piezo?? I have seen the whole Radio Shack style just glued in and have read instructions on how to remove the piezo element and install it.
